Officer began as Officer’s Wood Siding, as a siding was constructed to take timber from land owned by the large and prestigious Officer family (presided over by Sir Robert Officer) to Melbourne.
The hills above the town were rich in many different resources. Gold was discovered in 1870 and clay was dug for the numerous brickworks that dotted the area. There was also a wealth of timber in the scrubby forests that covered the hillsides, all they needed was a railway siding to get the timber to the Melbourne markets.
A brickmaking industry began in the 1880s, but died away after the collapse of the land boom.
On 17 November 2014, the Shire of Cardinia moved from its offices in Pakenham to a new location, making the town the Council seat in recognition of its long history and tradition.
